on the appearance of objects - by Adrian Setterfield

absolutearts.com Portfolio

...recently a friend gave a tip on the subject of objective appearance. And it goes something like this: Consider this page to be the empty space, which it is as a surface, empty of any markings. Then type one single letter on it. Notice how the letter appears from nothing how it appears in this space. One moment there’s nothing on the page, and the next moment there is.  And once its out there, it is only so, when fully recognised to be a specific letter and even if it is just an unknown shape, it will still be recognised  thus.

On seeing this, the following also appeared:

This also applies to every single thing. Everything that is conscious of, in this moment, basically appears in space...even the thoughts that are associated to appear in the brain...they too appear in empty space...brain appears in space, body appears in space etc. What has been called attention, is really the appearance of a thing and what gives this appearance autonomy, is awareness...which then too is attention/object. And this awareness is the appearance and appearance is awareness. And this space, i.e , this nameless what? Called space, that all awareness appears as, is what is already the case. So this is what you are...because this is what gives form to form and what gives rise to energy. And all else, i.e. the appearance, appears as duality, with its apparent opposite already in place. So that for dark there already is light... for up there is down, for left there is right etc. Whole and in complete balance Now.

So what is it that recognises?... What is that is aware?...How is space seen?...How is what you are, seen?.

It isn’t seen at all because it is what is seeing already. Right here, right now there is this kind of sense of ‘being’, prior to any thoughts about it. And this being is the seeing. Not necessarily only manifesting as ‘seeing’ with eyes, though. (This notion of seeing with the eyes, is itself another concept appearing). So, Being is already the case and there’s really nothing to do about being what you are then .There is no thing else than this.

You are already being and this, what is appearing, is what it looks like. This, right here and right now. It looks like what ever is conscious of in this moment, be it a painting, the sound of a car, bird song, baby crying etc...this is all the appearance of what you are, and you are the seeing of this. You never left this, cannot even get away from it...it just is.

What is called life, is spontaneous action appearing as what is already the case.

When the painting of space happens, forms appear of their own accord as do thoughts appear that seem to be about what is being painted. But no one knows what is really happening. And when the painting is seen to be completed, the form of itself is seen in such a varied way as to never resemble the same form from when it first seemed to appear, to what is known as a different perspective. I.e. it looks as if the recognition of the painting by the one who sees the painting appear as it happens for the first time, is different from that of someone else who sees the painting afterward. But what is actually happening is an apparent series of events that only seem to be linked to each other through the identification of one thought with another. The thought ‘I’ then the thought ‘am seeing this’...all purely conceptual and therefore not real at all. Thus it can be said that no one knows what is really happening. Even the ‘painting’ is conceptually recognised, but it seems to be more direct an experience than conceptual thought that comes and goes(even if thought itself is an experience).

The painting does not need the concept ‘I’ for itself to appear. It simply appears of its own accord....appears as space, in space. The ‘I’ thought is simply a fictitious character assumed to be real...but where is this ‘I’, really,...when there is only a painting here. The ‘I’ is a thought experience and the painting is a direct experience.

Looking into this apparent phenomena brings concepts into abstraction. There seems to be a point at which, on pondering such concepts as these, the mind looses a grip on knowledge. And this most probably is where abstraction gets recognised. Direct experience of Being, unadulterated by conceptual thinking. Abstract Art.

Something like this, anyway.

One Out of 15 Women - by Jim Lively

absolutearts.com Portfolio

"One Out of 15 Women" is the title of my newest painting.  The idea was conceived in relation to an upcoming themed member exhibit at Mckinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas.  The theme of the exhibition will be "fifteen". It will be interesting to see others' take on capturing fifteen on canvas. My take was a no-brainer since my paintings typically contain strong women images. Also, I love painting hair which is probably the norm for a guy who shaves his head.

In the painting "One Out of 15 Women", the viewer can see the back of the heads of 14 women.  One woman is even running her hands through her hair...driving all bald men even more crazy. There is only one woman staring back at the viewer.  I think it adds an air of intrigued or mystery. Why is she singled out? Any thoughts or comments?  www.jimlivelyart.com
