My daily routine of creative mind exercises will include Digital Art from here on out. It has become a fun pastime for me to start from scratch and develop an image from manipulating shapes and changing the hues and saturation of many colors to develop new age artwork. Below are some examples of recent digital art from my print on demand gallery: http://artprints.imagekind.com/

Laura Barbosa...Premiere Portfolio... http://www.absolutearts.com/laurabarbosa

absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-05T12:21:17Z</dcterms:modified>

Summertime and the Mangos are... - by Debra Cortese

absolutearts.com Portfolio

Ready! It takes an artist year to achieve an original style to their work… Vladimir has the ability to transform common landscapes into majestic canvases of color, shade and texture. He never resorts to gimmick and he composes his shots carefully while keeping it all-simple. No doubt we will see continued success for Vladimir as an Artist."
                                                           Gary Hanlon

"The flowers are not flowers in Vladimir's eyes. They are living and moving washes of color. Vladimir knows color; he understands the perplexity of textures and composition. That is how beautiful the works of Vladimir are. Once you see the work it is impossible to forget the art - to forget the man."
                                                           Cloud - Robert Policart

When you go to an exhibition of any kind, you expect to see something that will excite your imagination, cause you to ponder, or, as they say ‘snag the soul’. Rarely, however, do all three of these experiences converge. When people go to an exhibition of photography, many conclude that good photography is possible to do for anybody. Especially today, in the era of digital cameras. Indeed, the digital camera is the perfect tool, not a brush in paint facing a primed canvas...just seizes the moment and press the trigger in time. Moreover, the Photoshop computer program can be learned by anybody, for the enhancement of each image.
But, what is most strange is that it doesn’t work that way. Two, three or ten people can use the same camera at the same spot and each picture will be different. It turns out that the essence here is not in the actual camera, nor in knowing how to use it, technically, nor in proficiency in using computer image processing, although all of these things are, ultimately, useful.
The critical factor is in how the person sees what he is photographing, how he feels at that moment which stops time, how he relates to his subject. In short, it’s a matter of talent. One can generate reams of paper in trying to explain how talent works. But none of this, even with the participation of the artist himself, will draw us closer to understanding this process. Talent is a gift from God - no less a mystery than life itself.
It would be as futile to ‘demonstrate harmony through algebra’ as it would be to try to explain how this unusual, New York based photographic artist, Vladimir Andreyev works, how he starts the creative process, how he develops the work, and how he brings it to its conclusion. One small but important thing must be noted, however. This artist practically never retouches his photographs, preferring to minimize or eliminate entirely the intrusion of ‘Photoshop’ into his work. This tells us something about Andreyev’s artistic method.
It would be more fruitful, I feel, to try to understand why his photographs, so artless at first glance, make such a strong impact on everybody (without exception, mind you!) who has had even the most fleeting of encounters with his work.
So, what do we see in Vladimir’s photographs, or more accurately, his canvasses? First off, nature. America, Sweden, Italy, Russia…then, architecture, primarily in New York. Then, again, flowers, trees, rivers, sky, clouds. Rarely do people appear in his photographs, and seldom as the main subjects. This detail tells us a great deal about the artist’s philosophy. For Andreyev, people are not, by any means, the center of the universe, as they are for most of the rest of us. For Vladimir, man is but a small, not at all extraordinary, component of the magnificent picture painted by the Creator. The artist’s awe and reverence for this painting is virtually forced upon us, his viewers, through his use of the camera. Even the photographic novice understands that Andreyev does not wish to compete with God. He does not create ‘photobabble’, as do many of his New York contemporaries, looking for new shocks and effects. Similarly, he does not strive to capture a ‘slice of life’, thus imposing some preconceived idea upon his audience. It seems to me that, overall, Vladimir does not take his viewer into account, does not even think about him when he creates his photographic masterpieces. Moreover, in my opinion, there seems to be a total absence of thought in his work, paradoxical though that may sound.
However, there lives in his work something that most artists today have lost -passion! Powerful and inflammatory. Vladimir Andreyev’s pictures are permeated with an almost incandescent eroticism. Because of this great radiance of energy, the works at an exhibition require some three feet of space between them so that the viewer has, so to speak, ‘rest space’ between the works so that he can fully address each new work as he comes to it.
This passion, unclouded by intellectualism in art, in America at any rate, has been forgotten to such an extent that it seems today to be something bright and new. In this lies the discovery, the ‘eureka’ of Vladimir Andreyev. He returns art to its sources. He returns man to his primordial, inspirational, worshipful, almost pagan perception of nature. In my opinion, such a sensibility is confirmed in most of his photographs. The pictures taken in New York show the beauty of architecture created by man, which pales by comparison to that which is wrought by the hand of the Creator. His city landscapes are not as powerful as those of nature. One exception only confirms the rule his astonishing ‘In the Church’, where again, the main focus is not on the people, nor even the architecture, but the light.
Despite all of this, I would not say that Andreyev is a religious artist, in the traditional sense. The energies with which he fills his work, earthy warm and palpable, would not fit a color copy of nature were these works not filled with great amounts of air. Call it what you will, the works of Andreyev are alive with great, real spaces. Perhaps we can establish some relationship between Andreyev,s work and his ethnic origin. Great open spaces, untouched by man are characteristic of the Russian landscape. It would therefore be logical to conclude that, since he came to America as an adult, his outlook on life and art was formed before he came here, and before he took up photography professionally. However, it is not enough for Andreyev to simply feel space. He also has a talent for organizing this space, and this refers to his choice of vantage. He has an absolute sense of composition, a talent that is quite rare. I don’t know how he achieves this, whether it is while taking the picture or during its development afterwards, but he unfailingly determines the ‘golden mean’ of his image. That which the ancient Greeks discovered and developed by arduous means, the placement of objects on a flat plane to achieve the illusion of perfect harmony and balance, is given to Andreyev by right of talent.
By the same right, he is so fluid in his handling of color that artifice in his work is virtually invisible. What do I mean by this? Before the viewer has time to admire the lines and colors, and the meaning of what is depicted, he is drawn into the depth of this space bordered by four strips of wood. You feel this wonderfully when you experience Andreyev’s ‘Rose’ series. I don’t feel that we need to thank the master’s education in design at the Fashion Institute of Technology for the created effect. I tend to believe that this ability to immediately grasp the viewer stems from Vladimir ‘s past as an actor, and his artistic and musical education before he emigrated.
In Moscow, he was graduated from the Gnesin Academy, and, following this, the Institute of Culture. After this he spent twenty-five years on the stage in Russia as an actor and director. In 1992, at the age of forty-five, he immigrated to America where he was reeducated as a computer designer. Here he discovered in himself his gift for photography.
Behind this man is a wealth of experience, not all of it positive. Where, therefore does his virtual naiveté his almost childlike worldview comes from? How can such a combination of experience and fresh wonderment coexist? “This is a great mystery…”
“For me, photography is the most unique, and at the same time the most accessible means of expressing my relationship to the world. Of some 20,000 of my photographs, I regard 150 of them as being of the highest quality,” - said Vladimir Andreyev in an interview in the New York Weekly Russian Bazaar. This man drives himself relentlessly, as do all great masters. Perhaps this is why every year his work becomes more popular in the United States and in his native Russia.

Leonid Zonshain
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-02T04:00:08Z</dcterms:modified>

Vladimir Andreyev’s Photographic Art - by Russet Andrew

absolutearts.com Portfolio

Vladimir Andreyev’s Photographic Art

"Vladimir has a

remarkable artistic sense of capturing the moment when the scene or the subject is at its best…"

Richard Peterson

"Vladimir's Photos Capture Nature at

unique and beautiful times... He never resorts to gimmick and he composes his

shots carefully while keeping it all-simple. No doubt we will see continued

success for Vladimir as an Artist."

Gary Hanlon

"The flowers are not flowers in

Vladimir's eyes. After this he spent twenty-five years on the stage in

Russia as an actor and director. In 1992, at the age of forty-five, he

immigrated to America where he was reeducated as a computer designer. Here he

discovered in himself his gift for photography.

Behind this man is a wealth of experience, not all of it positive. Where,

therefore does his virtual naiveté his almost childlike worldview comes from?

How can such a combination of experience and fresh wonderment coexist? “This is

a great mystery…”

“For me, photography is the most unique, and at the same time the most

accessible means of expressing my relationship to the world. Of some 20,000 of

my photographs, I regard 150 of them as being of the highest quality,” - said

Vladimir Andreyev in an interview in the New York Weekly Russian Bazaar. This man drives himself relentlessly, as do all

great masters. Perhaps this is why every year his work becomes more popular in

the United States and in his native Russia.

Leonid Zonshain

absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-02T03:52:43Z</dcterms:modified>

IAC 2008 festival in Denmark - by Jorge Berlato

absolutearts.com Portfolio
International Art & Culture Festival to be held in Rødby, Lolland Denmark from August 1st – 7th, 2008.
This year's theme is among other things Climate/Global warming.

Fri 1. at 11pm Mayor Stig Vestergaard open the festival.
Sat 2. at 11pm Councillor Benny Damgaard open the festival.
Sun 3. at 11pm Member of Parliament Henrik Høegh open the festival.

Artists in all media and categories, visual art, art craft, musicians, dansers, theater and all other culture workers, assosiations, organisations, companies are welcome to participate for FREE.
The festival is not a traditional exhibition where you hang paintings in a a gallery. Is that your own original drawing
because it can't be. I saw that drawing in a book and I also
drew it. How much did you sell the drawing for?
Hello to whom wrote this email,

You are absolutely right...I have a pencil set with this book that has this picture. This is my second drawing ever. It is the drawing that I did for homework while taking an art class from a gallery...years ago. It means alot to me...It was accidentally seen by the university art director...therefore I followed his advice of taking college art classes. It was purchased by my deceased mom. She wanted to be the first to purchase my work. I inhereited it back. It was sold to my mom and now its not for sale.

Sometimes we jump to conclusions without really knowing the full story. Thats unfortunate...but we are all guilty of this behavior one time or another.

I wanted to share with everyone a piece of me...

I'm sharing this email and email response hoping that the person who wrote it would see my reply...As there was no email address to send it to.

Please let's be reminded that we sometimes need to inquire of ones work with the knowledge that we didn't walk in there shoes. I realize there are alot of crooks out there and we have to be accountable...but there are alot of good people that just want to create for the world to see.

absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-28T19:22:00Z</dcterms:modified>

Passion and Art - by Annette Labedzki

absolutearts.com Portfolio

Passion and Art
by Louise Osborn

Passion is love with energy, with action, practical love, active love, love that changes the world. Passion is mobile, motivated, not just focussed or possessed, but fully participatory with the object of that passion. Annette’s work is nothing if not vibrant, engaged, a true expression of her energies.

The studio is a sublime space as a result of passion. The merest line, painted or drawn here, is effected by a pressure, an angle and a pace informed by an active love of the process. We know, if we are not strangers to the language of visual marks (or spiritually blinded), what we are looking at. We read in the line the condition of the artist at the time of its creation. It can’t be faked, unless the viewer cannot read the art.

Where does this passion come from? Who knows? From talent? Aptitude? Or just from being alive, from having lies cleared from the eyes?

Her special gift, who she is, what her place in society, or rather culture is, where she fits, who she is born to be, these are truths not to be denied on pain of darkness, the darkening of her light and her life. Where success is present in painting (and color is light) it must indicate that the painter succeeded in staying in the light of herself, of living fully. This is what we admire, as we may do so ourselves in our own ways, or deny for fear of influence or comparison.

absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-28T17:42:50Z</dcterms:modified>

The Smoking Underground - Money, Magic, and The Assemblage Arts - by Richard Thomson

absolutearts.com Portfolio
Money, Magic and the Assemblage Arts
Throughout my life I have been fascinated by and seeking true magic and the freedom that it implies. Art was, in my mind, the gateway to both. During my past journey though painting and sculpting, I could sense the magic but not quite touch it. Then one day, the magic reached out to me and that day, I went out into the world and sought those things that had power but lost their original propose. I went into the studio and found my own paintings that I felt had no soul, and together we found my voice. The stories are about abandonment, rejection, fear, love, and, of course, Magic. While still bound to the everyday grind - in my studio with my things - I feel a sense of freedom and excitement for the magic that seems to materialize from the air.
While seeking new content and confirming that my current information sources were consistent with my direction, I am amazed and sometimes amused at the paths taken to tap into the magical collective. Colors, numbers, candles, gods, saints, herbs, beads, symbols, amulets, and relics all have meaning and purpose in ritual magic. I have always thought my job as an artist was to give visual expression of my world and a window to its possibilities. I never claimed to be more or less than a simple artist and craftsman seeking my own voice, but as I assembled my materials, some interesting events took place. I feel I should share this tale.

Earlier this spring, I came out of my studio only to have my wife tell me the world had gone to hell, and a lot of people, including us, were in trouble. Mortgage rates, war, unemployment, stock market, home builders, and gas prices were all out of control or in the crapper. So I did what any good artist would do…. Went back to my studio.
I really tried to ignore all that unpleasantness but once again the magic reached out to me. I thought all people need is a little hope, a symbol or maybe a LUCKY SHRINE. Through my books and across the internet, I assembled all things LUCKY and started building those shrines. Whether you view the following as magic or just a random occurrence is up to you.
While putting the final touches on my first LUCKY SHRINE I was approached by a local out-of-work builder and told that I had hail damage. If I let him bid the job to my insurance company, he would cover the deductible - $20,000 for new siding, roof, gutters and trim painted, all approved and paid for. Not one cent out of pocket. I gave that shrine to my nephew and his wife, who are expecting a baby, as a shower gift. As I was finishing up my second LUCKY SHRINE, as the paint was drying, I ran out for pop and snacks. I was compelled to do something I would never do; I bought a $10 scratch off ticket. I still have no idea why. I won $2,000. Tomorrow, I give this second shrine to my father-in-law to help him with his challenges.
Well, I've seen heaven and been through hell. Only time will tell which way this story is going to go.

absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-27T18:34:00Z</dcterms:modified>

Just a few Photos from Florence - by Glenda Santiago

absolutearts.com Portfolio<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGTuxOfvBXI/AAAAAAAAAPY/JqzfX8KAmdY/s1600-h/Copy+of+La+Pieta.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGTuxOfvBXI/AAAAAAAAAPY/JqzfX8KAmdY/s320/Copy+of+La+Pieta.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216556797874079090" /></a>
As I am editing and cataloging photos, I came across these from Florence that I wanted to share. "La Pieta", a copy in the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santo_Spirito_di_Firenze">Santo Spirito</a> church in Florence was sculpted by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanni_di_Baccio_Bigio">Giovanni Lippi</a>. The church is located across the Ponte Vecchio bridge and off a small street past the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palazzo_Pitti">Pitti Palace.</a> Also we went to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_di_Santa_Croce_di_Firenze">San Croce church</a>, where a monument is dedicated to Michealangelo designed by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Vasari">Giorgio Vasari.</a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGUCgjdyuVI/AAAAAAAAAPg/T-lXeJ_P3_U/s1600-h/Monument+to+Michelangelo.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGUCgjdyuVI/AAAAAAAAAPg/T-lXeJ_P3_U/s320/Monument+to+Michelangelo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216578501677857106" /></a>Many other monuments were there also that were dedicated to the likes of Galileo, Donnatello, Dante and Giotto. More photos to come later of those monuments.
As we were walking through the streets of Florence, we cam across this young artist who was drawing old master copies with pastels. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGUDM4lsBYI/AAAAAAAAAPo/qxZJBQ8xJJM/s1600-h/Street+painter.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGUDM4lsBYI/AAAAAAAAAPo/qxZJBQ8xJJM/s320/Street+painter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216579263262360962" /></a> There were street artists everywhere and it was exciting to watch as they painted and drew. There were masses of them in from of the entrance to the Uffizi also.
Legend has it that back in the Renaissance times, farmers would come to the market and find a fountain of the wild boar. The custom was that if they threw money into the fountain and it went down the drain, they would have a prosperous crop. So my husband threw a coin and if legend is true, we will not be having any prosperous crops.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGUDW7CrAjI/AAAAAAAAAPw/VxTm28OragA/s1600-h/Wild+Boar.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_AT6HrodNx08/SGUDW7CrAjI/AAAAAAAAAPw/VxTm28OragA/s320/Wild+Boar.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216579435719492146" /></a>
More images to come randomly, now I am getting ready to paint.
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-27T15:44:09Z</dcterms:modified>

My Biography - by Annette Labedzki

absolutearts.com Portfolio

BIOGRAPHY
I was born in St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. A few years later we moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I spent my childhood and early adulthood. However, I was always extremely homesick and finally in 1982 I moved back to Vancouver, B.C. I love living near the ocean. It gives me a great feeling of freedom, which influences my painting immensely.
I remember the first award I received was in Art class in grade 10. The superintendent of the Winnipeg School Board bought one of my paintings! I was so excited!
Nine months after moving to Vancouver, I met my future husband. He was a Polish Navy Officer, named Andrew, who had jumped ship in 1982. We are married and have been together for twenty-five years. We have one son, Johnny, and three crazy cats! The stability of my marriage has given me the emotional support and courage to pursue my art career on a full time basis.
Before attending The Emily Carr College of Art and Design, I spent a whole intense year drawing from nature and studying human anatomy; figurative drawing and painting.
I especially loved drawing portraits. I enjoyed going beyond the face and capturing the person’s soul.
I received my BFA at Emily Carr College of Art and Design and spent another year studying philosophy at The University of British Columbia. During this time my husband learned English, drove a taxi, received his BMLS degree (Bachelor of Medical Lab. Sciences) and received his DMD degree (dentist).
After graduating from University we bought a dental practice in northern B.C. Again, I felt terribly homesick for Vancouver. I wanted to turn back before our UHaul was even unloaded. We felt isolated and two years later we were back in Vancouver. The valuable lesson I learned from this experience was that I must live near the ocean. It is vitally important for me as an artist. The ocean gives me great inspiration, peace and a wonderful sense of freedom.
Another award I received was First Prize at the Pacific Northwest Annual Show at the University of Oregon, U.S.A. The University bought my painting and it is now in their permanent collection.
I spend my days drawing, painting, creating collages and I hope to do so for many years to come.

Powered by Coppermine Photo Gallery
Designed & Developed by Starcom Systems
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-26T18:51:42Z</dcterms:modified>

10 words to describe my art - by Lisa Carney

absolutearts.com Portfolio
TEXTURE unique SUBLIMINAL intuitive SPONTANEOUS original COLORFUL contrast MYSTERIOUS abstract EXPRESSION modern LAYER vigourous COLOR balance VIBRANT nature EARTH tactile MODERN contemporary AFFORDABLE collectable OUTSTANDING...

Well ok, thats more then 10 words and I could certainly go on and on! I’m disappointed when I find someone who says they’ll do the job but then I wait and wait and wait, I make a phone call and then wait some more. It’s frustrating when the next step in your career depends on a web designer who isn’t performing and you can’t do it yourself so you feel stuck. I finally found a great company : www.starcomsystems.net . I posted my job on www.elance.com , this is a great website, your money is safe and goes into esgrow first before you pay the designer. Their address at Elance is :http://starcomsystems.elance.com. Starcom Systems was very professional, very helpful, and very speedy. In one week they’ve created a new site for me. It is a user friendly site, which I had asked for. I can load my own images and text. My new site is: www.Labedzki-Art.com. I’m still in the beginning stages of creating new pages and loading images.
I wanted to share this information with other people, in case you’re “waiting” for someone, who isn’t getting the job done.
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-25T16:19:33Z</dcterms:modified>

New Artist on absoluteart.com- Ryan Orewiler - by Ryan Orewiler

absolutearts.com Portfolio
As of 6-23-08 Ryan Orewiler is a offical member of absolute art.com.
Visit the artis's porfolio or website to view cityscapes and abstract paintings.

absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-24T14:22:38Z</dcterms:modified>

New listing on Ebay - by Lisa Carney

absolutearts.com Portfolio
I have listed a series of 16x16" works on paper that I recently re-worked and mounted on 3/4 inch canvas. I named my studio The Creaky Easel because the easel that I am currently borrowing from my granddaughter creaks and and shakes as I pant!
I am very excited to announce that an article has been published about my artwork. I am this week's <a href="http://designersdepot.noelevz.com/?p=299"><span style="font-weight:bold;">featured artist<span style="font-style:italic;"></span></span></a> on Designer's Depot a website by Noelevz. Check out this site, there is a lot of interesting information available at <a href="http://www.designersdepot.noelevz.com"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Designer's Depot</span></a> and I am honored to be chosen for this article. Noel has done a lovely job on this article as on everything on the site. After you read the article, please drop me a comment and let me know what you think about it. <a href="http://designersdepot.noelevz.com/?p=299"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Click here to read the article.<span style="font-style:italic;"></span></span></a>

I am working on a new painting as well as trying to find local art associations to get involved in and looking for a local gallery or even just some wall space in a coffee house to exhibit my artwork. It is quite a challenge to get established in a new town, but I am determined to do it.

For more news about my art visit <a href="http://www.creakyeasel.com"> The Creaky Easel Blog</a>
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-23T14:35:33Z</dcterms:modified>

summertime - by Thomas Roethlisberger

absolutearts.com Portfolio
it's summer in switzerland. bright and rich colors, warm evenings and gentle breezes in the night. it's time for fantasies, for less textile and forms; natural forms. just see the newest painting and enjoy the summer (with or without socker (in Europe)).
tom
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-23T05:58:51Z</dcterms:modified>

Sun on the Lake - by Lora Vannoord

absolutearts.com Portfolio
On exhibit in July at the Dunedin Library will be my original oil painting "Sun on the Lake".
This painting was inspired by a morning walk in the park on Lake Tarpon in Palm Harbor,
Florida. Catalogue is produced normally with a text by any art critique, gallery owner, art curator and some images of paintings. It is distributed to buyers, media people, and some times to exhibition visitors. It is mostly like product catalogues though its form is different. Every big company makes product catalogue to distribute among consumers. In consumer product catalogues there are details of products with prices are given while in art exhibition catalogue detail about paintings are given, what makes art catalogue different than consumer product catalogue is that in art exhibition catalogue critic writes about artist and his painting so far buyer could know the value of artist’s art work. Information given about artist is often incorrect and superficial. I did never read any catalogue in which any critic have written any thing negative about artist’s work. Why one would write any thing negative about his own product? Criticizing an art work or artist is not in fashion since it is considered art product first rather than a work of art. It is considered that by criticizing artist’s art works buyer will not buy art work. Catalogue is produced with only one attitude, to sale the product. When in India art market did not existed and artists had no money at that time too catalogues were written but with a positive approach and often with truthfulness. Though, at that time too criticism on catalogues was debarred. But at least writing was truthful perhaps writers were truthful and sensitive to art. But nowadays catalogue writing has become very fictitious and vague. Some catalogue writers write very confusingly and without seeing art works. If someone criticizes an artist and his art works he is considered enemy. Our Indian modern art society is still non democratic in this regard. We take criticism negatively, for us criticism means false appreciation. But writing criticism is always helpful for art progress, it is like purifier. When criticism is taken aesthetically it reject wrong and non progressive trends and pushes progressive ones forward to develop and create new. By merely writing Wah..wah..and producing good catalogues will not do any good to artist and art. Often I do hear from artists that in India critic do not exist. In sixty years of our artistic journey why there is no critic only appreciator of art. Because artists did not like criticism perhaps they do fear that criticism would destroy their market. Keshav Mallik in an interview recently published in a book ‘contemporary rajasthan’ said, “I was given boot one day after having worked fourteen years reviewing for ‘hindustan times’. It happened like this one day. V.G.Verghese summoned me to his office and told me ‘you don’t know how to write on art, you may go home’. I had written something that did not go down well with the artist. He not only complained against me but also got others to write letters to the same effect”. What would have been the interest of a newspaper in expelling an art critic who was writing seriously? Keshav Mallik complains further, “ when Jgadish Swaminathan came to Delhi from Bhopal, he asked ‘times of india’ not to get me to review his show….similarly, Gulam Rasool Santosh stopped talking to me after I commented on the use of very bright colour and repetition in his works. He got Kanahyalal kaul, an art reviewer, to write a letter against me in the newspaper. Artists are so intolerant to adverse criticism they mistake honest criticism for personality enmity. Even in the case of Satish Gujral, I didn’t mince words when his work started repetitive. Predictably, he was miffed. It is the same story with most big artists in the country. The moment we hand them celebrity status, they get off from the fundamental concerns of art and stop growing as artists”. Criticism did not happen in Indian art because Indian art has become business. Who would like his product to be criticized? We don’t think about art seriously this why Husain is still our boss and master dictating entire art scene with his controversies however he have not yet found international recognition except auction houses. And Auction houses are not any criteria for artistic recognition since it is just falsification and is a game of some few money makers. See how when Tayeb Mehata’s kali was auctioned in seven crore, next day Husain’s painting was auctioned somewhere more costly as though it was a competition fought by auction houses created by dealers.

We should start thinking about art because thinking is needed for progress. Critic should change the tone of writing if it is for modern art. I do wonder how it is possible for an author to write the same language and tone every time and for every artist. One day I put together all catalogues written by Ashok Bajpeyi and started reading in order to know what he writes and how he writes. And I do wonder, this big name in Hindi literature in writing catalogue for very new artists of Bhopal quotes Big literary authors and philosophers merely to justify that artist’s work is not less than the concept in quoted texts. Artist is raised to the level of great philosophers by false philosophizing of art works. We authors can make mistake sometimes because may be we are new in experience and writing but if Ashok Bajpeye a famous author- poet writes unjustifiably than many questions arise. In west if any author quotes some one in his writing than he makes some point regarding what he writes, but often quotes from any big philosopher or poet or thinker are used in a relevant context and for the authors of the parallel stature. When, Ashok Bajpayee quotes Rilke, Milan Kundera etc for an artist who is consciously backward than his writings on art and artist becomes inauthentic. In western writing tradition sometimes big debates were fought on who quoted what and why. Thinkers do take quotes seriously it’s not a fun. Writing is a serious affair its not that ‘take some idea from some where and make a point’.

In art exhibitions catalogue no doubt plays a big role but it should be rational, practical and must be constructively written. In spite of book size catalogue one can publish seven eight page catalogue but not like product catalogue rather artistic one and critically written. Some times galleries do publish catalogues in competition with other galleries which is a wrong trend; it should not be like that. What kind of benefit one can avail through this kind of competition? Nothing except self satisfaction that I am big one! Catalogues must be published for public distribution, for exhibition visitor; for it can educate people. When I was new in art and freelance art critic galleries often refused to give me catalogue indicating his/her finger towards the desk where on placard the prices of catalogues were written. It was very embarrassing for me, who was at least writing about art and interested in art. With catalogue pricing art losses public, public think it is only for those who have money. Galleries should be sensitive to visitors and art lovers; it should not think that he who does not buy art is irrelevant. Artist and galleries should create an environment of art in which general man could enjoy it and appreciate it. For betterment of art peoples involvement is needed. At present Indian modern art is bourgeois art since every art activity is done in the close circle of high society people. Art will have democratic spirit only when people appreciate it. Critic should take interest in promoting and popularizing valid art not kitsch. In India people don’t like to read about modern art so there are very few publishers who publish art books. Often books are published by galleries to promote artists and to put value in their art works.
When I was started purchasing Indian contemporary art books for my own library, I found that majority of art books are not art books rather are big catalogues published by galleries. Very few books are available which enlightens you about contemporary modern Indian art and artist. On Indian contemporary masters there are books which do only appreciate and claim them MAHAN (great beings). I found no book in which some one has written critically. If an artist is grown old he needs critical assessment. By assessment we can learn what we have missed and what we need. We should discard worshipping tendency of cultural personalities. We should learn this from west. If Nietzsche would have been born in India we would have been constructed temples and there would have been a religion. But west took him just as a thinker and contributor in human progress. We mystify cultural people; by mystifying we put more and more value in them in order to get more and more value from their less valuable cultural products. There is sameness in mystification and glamorization. In culture this goes sometimes together sometimes one after another. One should reject these kinds of trends for the sake of progressiveness in art. Art community should be progressive in thinking. Galleries should not take art only from the point of money making rather they should bear responsibility to create spirit of art. They should discard non-progressive elements prevailing in art.
We are still very close minded regarding approach to art. We should come out in open from closed art houses and sheer business mentality in order to progress. Even business too could not develop in close world it want openness.
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-12T05:29:45Z</dcterms:modified>

Ramblin' Thoughts - by Mark Brockman

absolutearts.com Portfolio
It is difficult at best for the viewer to discern the meaning behind an artist’s work. They after all only have the image before them and not the artist’s thoughts, unless of course the work has beside it one of those little cards that describe what it is the artist is trying to impart. At shows, receptions, artists are sometimes asked to explain a particular work. I like the idea of the viewer coming up with their own ideas about my work, but I do at times give a clue as to the paintings meaning through the title, but not always.
Lately I have returned to the painting knife. I used to use it quite a bit some years ago and though I have used it off and on over the years never to any real degree. But in frustration with a recent painting I took a knife and attacked it, (no I didn’t stab it) how wonderful it then began to look, so I thought, ‘What the hell,’ and I have been attacking my work. With brush and knife the new work seems to have a strength, I think it is a good thing to shake things up in ones way of doing the work.
I have slowed down my ‘production’ some, well not really slowed down but take more time in developing my work, making it more, giving it more meat, which means I am creating less work and showing less work. One reason is because I have felt the need to put even more of myself into my work then before, and I have always put a lot of me in it. Is there any of me left? Oh yes. Another reason is that the work isn’t selling very fast and why have an inventory so large (please do not accuse me of creating a false sense of supply and demand, although not a bad idea if I was already famous, but being unknown for the most part, it would do no good). I know we are talking about art here and not hammers or such and I do not mean to use such non-artistic terms like production and inventory, but that is what it is.
Happy accidents, a term that means many things to many artists. I guess in reality there are no ‘happy accidents’ or so some say, maybe they are right. A ‘happy accident’ though should be looked at within a work and one should try to see if it has happened before (in other works) and can it be used again. Often what we do in the heat of the moment is less a ‘happy accident’ and more our way (technique if you will) of translating what we see and want in the work. We just didn’t over think it, a practice that to my mind is more harmful then the uncontrolled ‘happy accident.’ One should not rely on ‘happy accidents’ one should cultivate them.
Much can influence ones work. Recently I took up playing the banjo. I have no personal musical history, though my father could play the piano and my brother was a musician and singer. But I have never played an instrument before. Before you make that ‘BANJO!’face, it is not the sharp instrument one thinks of when one thinks ‘BANJO’ at least it does not have to be. Any way I am finding my new found knowledge of music creeping into my painting. How wonderful.
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-10T18:34:43Z</dcterms:modified>

Preparing for my first Symposium. - by Lisa Carney

absolutearts.com Portfolio
This weekend their was a symposium (Outdoor art fair) in my area. It was beautiful yesterday, so DH and I went and had a look at how artists were set up. Most of them had gazebos. I did buy one the other day at Walmart. It was one of those portable ones that you can bring along when you go camping. When we got back home, because it was so lovely out, we decided to open and install the gazebo. It went up real easy and in no time. I saw people using wire shelving to suspend their art inside the gazebo. I’ll have to shop around for that. If ever I like doing these types of shows I will be fully equipped for next summer. This year I’m only doing one. My first. I’m testing the waters.

Last night, I took some 6x6 inch and some 4x4 inch canvas and gave them a coat of gesso. I want to make a few small works to sell at this outdoor fair. I’ll probably start working on them later this week. I have a month and half till the show. I also have some ACEO’s that I want to mat in 8x10 inch mats. They will probably be attractive to buyers too. As I understand it, a lot of little things sell at these outdoor events. Now don’t get me wrong, I will be exhibiting some larger works too. As I think these types of events are good for establishing contacts.

On another note…I am so proud of myself. I started working out at a local gym. Yep. I’m taking charge of not only the art aspect of my life. I want to feel better and I really need the energy. I went 3 times last week and plan to do the same this week.

I’ll have photos as I get to work on my symposium preparations.
absolutearts.com Portfolio

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-09T18:58:59Z</dcterms:modified>

FLEDGLINGS - by Cassandra Gordon-Harris

absolutearts.com Portfolio
To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist. Robert Schumann I have pulled out the soapbox again, forgive me:

When I was young and quite arrogant, a mere fledgling filled with a passion fired by South American and Spanish artists in every genre, I came to live in the art Mecca of Santa Fe. Here I met my first and best mentor. She was a brash Berliner filled with political and social ideals and understood it was all about the paint. Having obtained fame in her own right in Germany, she now thrust her sword of indignation into the fragilities of the American society. She took me under her hard wing for a time sharing her passion for chasing perfection, for getting the paint to move, dance and cry. It drove me beyond the words good enough or happy accidents. It made me lust for the power of a brushstroke, the glory of color blended until it became an entity of emotional strength.
The depth of her teachings took me years to truly understand; though words, though actions, though the paint. I do not think she ever knew how much she gave me and I am not sure I ever expressed that gratitude. When the light finally dawned, I began to teach others as I continued to find the next level, the next, and the next. I still search; it will never be good enough because in learning and striving I grow not only as an artist but also as a human.
I am still arrogant because it distresses me to see good potential artists proclaiming it is good enough. Or even worse being proud of a happy accident. The rise of mediocrity in our society and in the art world has diminished our expectations for anything that could make us better.
One could state the case that those happy accidents are the subconscious trying to emerge. But if you don’t take that incident, that potential awareness and try to do it again and again; to chase the potential and make it yours; then it is nothing more than a fluke with temporary value. I have with all my students tried to use a positive and direct force to give them the opportunity to see beyond what is front of them, so they may learn.
You can only rise above your own inadequacies if you are willing to take yourself beyond the edge of morning. Any fool can throw paint on a canvas, swirl it around, spatter it a bit and call it art. Most can learn the perfection of copying reality. However, it takes something more to be a t
